Interview tip by Thomas Edison

Interview tip – no salt!

Here is a story I heard about how Thomas Edison conducted interviews. His technique goes like this:

Back in his day, people often had soup for lunch. So when Edison met a potential hire, he would invite them to lunch, and order soup. The candidates most often ordered soup too. Then he observed. If the candidate added salt to their soup before first tasting, they were immediately disqualified. That was the interview. Why? Because Edison did not want to hire people who made decisions based on assumptions.

If you want innovation, most likely you shouldn’t either. If your company needs to break thru the assumptions and the status quo, maybe this little interview tip will help in sorting out the true innovative and creative thinkers – from the posers.
