As a creative entrepreneur, Tom has started three businesses, written/co-authored five books, serves as a design advisor to countries and companies, and is one of the few people in the world with a PhD in design management.

Dr. Thomas Lockwood is author/co-author of “Innovation by Design” (2017), “The Handbook of Design Management” (2011), “Design Thinking” (2009), “Corporate Creativity” (2009), and “Building Design Strategy” (2008), and an expert blogger for Fast Company.

Thomas is recognized as a thought leader at integrating design and innovation practice into business, and building great design and UX organizations. He received a PhD, an MPhil and an MBA in Design Management from the University of Westminster in London after a BA in Business and Design from Eastern Michigan University.

In 2011 he formed Lockwood Resource, an international consulting and recruiting firm specializing in design, UX and innovation leadership. Previously, he was president of the non-profit Design Management Institute in Boston from 2005 to 2011, a visiting professor at Pratt University in NYC, a corporate design director at Sun Microsystems and StorageTek, and founder, creative director and art director at agencies in Boulder, Colorado. He has created high-tech skiwear for the US Olympic Nordic Ski Team, corporate identity and design programs for Fortune 500 organizations, and is a frequent design award judge. He is a speaker and workshop leader in over 20 countries.
